Robert Downey Jr. is an A-list actor that we all love to hate. Whether you despise him or delight in him, there is definitely a reason to pay him some attention. The quality of movies he has done so far in his career is very much a reason to. Aside from that, there is his heart for charity, a heart for public service, which tells you this guy only plays his ‘bad boy’ roles all too well.
Three Wonderful Decades in Showbiz
Downey entered showbiz in his younger days. It was a time when he is too inspired to explore life. That’s why he grabbed it with both hands and pursued a career in entertainment. He is one of the most enigmatic actors we have around and he has been like that right from the start. It is not quite surprising how he is piling up movie assignment after movie assignment.
However, it was not an easy way climbing up. Downey started in showbiz at age 5. His work flow was a non-stop machine ever since. He played roles here and there in films and television shows and series. He was part of many coming of age films during his teens. When he stepped on his 20s, he became ripe for mature roles, which earned him strong recognition from film critics.
Fame and fortune is something that was quite difficult to manage, even for a wise young man such as Downey. He was constantly arrested for drug-related charges and went in and out of treatment facilities to help keep him sober. When he finally embraced sobriety full-time, Downey’s showbiz career again began to take flight. He appeared in many commendable films including “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”, “Gothika”, and “The Singing Detective”. He also landed the role of Iron Man in two films of the same name, “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2” (he is now in the works for “Iron Man 3”), and played this comic book superhero in the hit movie “The Avengers”. Aside from Iron Man, there is another character that is associated with Robert Downey Jr. That is the role of Sherlock Holmes, the famed British detective that stars in “Sherlock Holmes” and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”. With an award-winning performance after another, it is not quite surprising the Downey’s name almost always come up in prestigious bodies such as the Oscars and the Golden Globe.
The Singing Sensation
Apart from acting, Downey Jr. is also passionate about singing. In 2004, he released an album entitled “The Futurist”. Prior to this CD, he was known singing several soundtracks from his own films including “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”, “Too Much Sun”, “Friends and Lovers”, and “the Singing Detective” among others.
If he have had several awards and recognitions for acting, his singing career did not take off that good. Still, it is something that Downey Jr. is proud to have done in his life as music is all part of it.
The Charity Man
But Robert Downey Jr. is more than just an A-list actor. His doings outside of showbiz clearly show his heart for public service, for reaching out to the poor and needy.
Downey is an avid supporter of causes involving animal welfare and of affecting real change in children’ lives. He also supports causes for conservation. He also works hand in hand with organizations to eradicate homelessness.
Some of the charities and foundations that Robert Downey Jr. is involved in include Orca Network, Clothes Off Our Back, and Midnight Mission among others.
Downey Jr. also has very strong political views. In fact, he said in an interview that “You can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary, and really understand it, and come out a liberal.”
Robert Downey Jr.: The Man
Much has been said about Downey Jr.’s filmography or brush with drugs or works for charity and politics. It is time that you get to know the man – the real thing.
Robert Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965 in Manhattan, New York to parents who are both connected to the entertainment industry. Mr. Downey Sr. is an actor, producer, director, cinematographer, and writer. His mother Elsie, meanwhile, is an actress who used to star in films of Robert Downey Sr.
Downey Jr. didn’t have a very child-friendly life. He was surrounded by drugs, his father being a self-confessed drug addict. His parents also separated while he was in his teens and all those troubles at home made him drop out of Santa Monica High School and pursuing an acting career full-time. However, it was never too late for the actor as he was able to redeem himself before TV and movie productions back out on him. That’s why he was able to secure roles that other Hollywood actors can only dream about.
Downey Jr. had few failed relationships. But apart from embracing sobriety, he also found love in producer Susan Levin after his last trip to the rehab. They now live happily married and Levin is considered the luckiest girl on earth for being married to one of the most charismatic actors in Hollywood.
