Tom Selleck is an American film actor and producer. He was born on January 29, 1945. He has been in over 50 films and made numerous TV guest appearances although he is best known for his role in the 1980s TV series Magnum P.I.
He was born in Detroit but grew up in Los Angeles. He started out as a model and played basketball in college. A drama coach encouraged him to get into acting.
After appearing in some TV commercials, Selleck landed a role in the Rockford Files, a TV show in the 1970s. Soon after, he was cast into the lead role in Magnum P.I. The show would become a huge hit, lasting 8 seasons (1980 to 1988). The show helped establish Selleck as an international star.
After the end of the show, Selleck has continued to appear in various movies. Among his most notable works include the Runaway, Three Men and a Baby and Quigley Down Under. Beginning in 2005, he began playing the role of policeman Jesse Stone in numerous TV movies.
He is also well known for appearing in many western movies including Shadow Riders, the Sacketts and Last Stand at Sabre River. His role as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in the 2004 film Ike: Countdown to D-Day earned him critical acclaim.

Selleck supports the Revlon Run/Walk for Women and the Entertainment Industry Foundation. In addition, Selleck is devoting his time for groups that advocate voter education and cancer research. He also supports charitable groups that fight hunger, promote education and the arts.
Selleck is also an advocate of women’s rights. He has also established a foundation that encourages reading among deaf children. In 2009, he was named national spokesperson of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Education Center.
Selleck was given an honorary doctorate by Pepperdine University for good moral character and ethics. Hs helped establish the Character Counts Coalition and a member of the Michael Josephson Institute of Ethics.
In 1997 he was given the Horizon Award by the Congressional Award in Washington DC. This award is handed out by the Congressional Award Board of Directors and the Joint Leadership of the United States Congress to people who have set fine examples for young Americans to follow.
Social and Political Views
Selleck believes people have the right to bear arms, and has shown his support by appearing in commercials in support of the NFA (National Rifle Association). When it comes to politics, he is an independent but tends towards libertarianism in many issues. He was also outspoken in his support for President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.
During the 1992 elections he donated to the presidential campaign bid of Democrat Senator Paul Tsongas. In 1997, Selleck was urged to run for the Senate but he refused. Selleck endorsed the 2008 presidential bid of Senator John McCain.
Tom Selleck has a son named Kevin and a daughter, Sarah. He has a home in Jonesboro, Maine and continues to appear in many films and TV movies.
